With three (3) matches to end the 2021/2022 Premiere league season in Ghana, Asante Kotoko has officially been declared Champions of the GPL after playing a one all draw with regional rivals Ashanti Gold Football club in Obuasi Len Clay Sports Stadium. It was a fearsome contest in Obuasi Ashanti Gold were determined to stop Kotoko from winning the league in their backyard.
Ashanti Gold made the intention clear right from the onset of the game as they heaped pressure on the Asante Kotoko midfield and defense. Ash Gold eventually took the lead through their in-form striker, Yaw Annor after capitalizing on Andrews Appau’s mistake right on the edge of the centre circle. Ashanti Gold continued piling the pressure on Asante Kotoko throughout the first half and created a whole lot of goal scoring opportunities but failed to utilize them. In fact it was total dominance from the Ash Gold team throughout the first half and this lead to many Kotoko fans doubting weather the team will be able to have a good scoreline and win the the league.
Getting to the end of the first half coach Prosper Narteh Ogum made a tactical charge by pulling out Evans Adomako and bringing on Emmanuel Keyekeh to booster their midfield. This substitution eventually changed everything for Kotoko in the second half as Kotoko begun finding their rythem and started creating goal scoring chances. The much awaited Equalizer and the eventual league winning goal come in the 64th minute as Maxwell Agyemang connected perfectly to Imoro’s free kick on the edge of the Penalty box. It was a powerful header that went past the Ash Gold goalkeeper with making any attempt to stop the ball.
After the 90 minutes, Asante Kotoko earn a vital point from the game and that was enough for the team to be crowned Champions of the on going premier league season.
Kotoko have won the league after obtaining 60 points from 31 match with 3 more games to go. We say Congratulations to the Champions. Asante Kotoko is a well deserved champions. They have really faugh well for this glory. The season has not been an easy one but with unity, determination, and hard work the team has come this far. Congratulations to the technical team and the the playing body for their hard work and Commitment. To the board and the management team, we say well done for the support and good recruitment done.
The Ghana football Association has congratulated Kotoko and stated that the trophy will be presented to the team in their final match against Elmina Sharks in Kumasi Baba Yara Sports stadium on the 12th of June 2022.
